Rose Breasted Cockatoo

rose breasted cockatoo

Also called the Rose Cockatoo and Galah Cockatoo the Rose Breasted Cockatoo is native to Australia and are usually seen in groups of a hundred or more.

They are about 14 inches long and have a rose colored chest, belly neck and face with gray wings and tails along with a white crest.

Although it isn't a fool proof method of sexing usually the mature males have dark brown irises and the females a light brow to red irises.

They can be taught to talk, but as with all cockatoos they are better at learning tricks than they are at talking.

Rose Breasted Cockatoos as pet parrots

Galah cockatoos are friendly and affectionate parrots that are both playful and intelligent.

They thrive on attention and are great at learning tricks.

As a rule they aren't all that noisy except maybe in the early morning or evening, however if they get bored they can make a lot of noise.

All cockatoo birds have a special dust that is used in preening that may cause a problem if you are prone to allergies.

Galah cockatoos are prone to developing fatty tumors so it's important to restrict the amount of seeds that you feed them.

Use bird pellets as the main diet and supplement them with fruits and vegetables.

Exercise is also important for your birds health and you should let your cockatoo out of the cage to get some exercise at least once a day. Rose Breasted Cockatoos don't chew as much as some of the other cockatoos do, but they still love to chew things up so provide them with some wood to chew on.

They are inquisitive and active birds so a variety of puzzles and toys are required.

Rose Breasted Cockatoo cages.

Galahs are active birds and you should get the biggest cage that you have space for. At the very least it should be 3 feet X 3 feet and 4 feet high with a bar spacing no more than 1 inch.

There should be bars above the bottom of the cage to keep your parrot from walking on the droppings.

Line the bottom of the cage with newspaper or paper towels rather than bedding material.

There should be a variety of different sized perches and a good supply of toys to keep your pet occupied.

The Rose Breasted Cockatoo is an affectionate and entertaining pet parrot and is a good choice for anyone that is willing to spend some time with it.
