They vary in size, color, space requirements, the amount of noise they can, and will make, how hard they are to care for, how social they are and how much time you need to spend with them. Finding the right parrot for you requires an understanding of the qualities, quirks, temperaments of each as well as what they require for their care and training. This is a brief overview of each parrot specie with links to more detailed information.
Amazon ParrotsAmazons are medium to large parrots that are predominately green with accenting colors on the heads, tails and wings. With the exception of the African Gray they are considered to have the best talking ability. Amazons are quite independent as far as parrots go and as long as they have enough toys they can amuse themselves. Because they can be aggressive they can be a challenge, but in the right hands they make excellent pets.
Budgerigars (Budgies)The Budgie Bird is part of the parakeet family, but because of their popularity I've given them their own listing. Don't let their small size fool you, they are very intelligent and entertaining parrots. They are inexpensive, easy to to keep and can learn to talk. If you get a young one they are very easy to train, and make a delightful addition to your home
CockatielsCockatiels are actually members of the Cockatoo family, but have their own genus. They are a relatively small parrot, but they make up for it in personality. They aren't as demanding as some of the larger parrots, but if you want a happy tame bird be prepared to spend a least a little time with them each day. They aren't difficult to look after, and they tend to form strong bonds with their handlers. They are an excellent choice for those with a limited budget or space, but want an affectionate bird as a pet.
CockatoosCockatoos are extremely friendly, sociable and cuddly birds, but they they demand more attention than any other parrot breed. The distinctive crest of feathers on the top of their head is the most distinguishing physical feature of the Cockatoo. Cockatoos are considered the most loyal and cuddly of all the parrots, but because they are so social they need a lot of attention each day. Their need for attention and the fact that they can live up to 90 years doesn't make them ideal for everyone. For the dedicated owner they are fantastic pets, and if you are sure that you are willing to take on the commitment you can't go wrong.
ConuresConures are small to medium sized parrots that have pointed tails. They are colorful, playful and affectionate birds that depending on the species will live between 15 and 35 years. Most originate from Central and South America, but there are a few species that make their homes in Mexico and the Caribbean Islands. They are social, active, playful parrots with sweet dispositions and are easy to train.
Macaw ParrotsMacaws are some of the most colorful parrots in the world. Most of them are big, and they can all be loud, which doesn't make them ideal for apartment living. Even the mini macaws can be quite noisy at times. They are beautiful, social and intelligent, but be forewarned, they demand a lot of attention if you don't want a screaming ill behaved bird on your hands. If you are willing to devote 50 or more years giving one the attention and companionship it needs it will respond in kind and you will have a lifelong companion.
ParakeetsThere are over a hundred different types of Parakeets, the most common of which is the Budgie. They are small and colorful birds with long tapered tails. Parakeets are sociable, easy to train and easy to care for. They are a good choice for someone new to the world of parrots. © PetParrotsWeb.com All Rights Reserved
