Blue Fronted Amazons as pets

This is one of the most popular pet parrots and for good reason.

They are excellent at learning to talk, and are highly intelligent, social and curious birds.

The only real downside to them is that as they reach maturity they will go into a bluffing stage which makes them somewhat aggressive.

With proper handling and training they can be taught that aggression is improper behavior and become very loving and fun pets.

Blue Fronted Amazon Care

All amazon parrots are prone to obesity which can cause liver damage and cancer so it's best to keep the seeds and nuts to a minimum.

The best diet is a pellet based diet supplemented with fruits and vegetables, saving the seeds and nuts for special treats.

In addition to a proper diet they need exercise and play.

Let your parrot out of the cage as often as you reasonable can, but just be sure you keep an eye on them when they are out.

With their curious nature and the fact that they love to chew they can soon cause serious damage to a room or to themselves.

As with all parrots they need companionship and socialization. It will be up to you as a responsible pet owner to spend time playing with and training your amazon.

Blue Fronted Amazon Cages

Blue Fronted Amazons love to climb so it is wise to get a cage big enough that they can climb and move around.

The cage also needs to be big enough to hold toys that they can chew on and play with when they are locked inside.

You should also equip the cage with a variety of different sized perches to keep their feet healthy.

The minimum sized cage should be 18 X 18 inches and at least 2 feet tall. Remember that they like to climb.

Be careful about buying a painted cage, the paint could contain toxic materials and your parrot will chew on the bars.

There should be bars on the bottom of the cage to allow the droppings to fall through.

Line the cage bottom with newspaper or paper towel rather than bedding material that can develop a fungus.

Clean the cage every day and make sure that there is always a fresh supply of water available.

If you are looking for a great parrot that is excellent at learning to talk and do tricks the Blue Fronted Amazon may be the right parrot for you.
