The African Grey Parrot, sometimes called the Grey Parrot, is considered the best talking parrot of all the parrot species.

It is is a medium-sized bird which originates from West and Central Africa.

African Greys are regarded to be one the most intelligent birds in existence.

They are a gentle bird that makes a great pet.

The two subspecies of African Grey parrots are the Congo African Grey and the Timneh African Grey.

At 12 to 14" the Congo is slightly larger than the Timneh which averages 11 to 13".

The Timneh is a darker grey color with a darker maroon tail than the Congo.

The Congo African Grey has an all black beak where as the Timneh African Grey has a horn color on the top of it's beak.

African Grey Parrots - caring for your parrot.

You parrot needs a variety of food types. An all seed diet will cause them to become fat, so you should feed your grey a mixture of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

Be aware that some foods are toxic to parrots. Here's a small sample to avoid.

  • Alcohol
  • Apple seeds
  • Peach pits

When it comes to cages the bigger the cage the happier your African Grey will be, but they need to be at least 36" X 40" and 40" high.

You need room for food and watering dishes, different sized perches, a variety of toys as well as plenty of space for your bird to move around and play.

Never use bedding material to line the floor of a bird cage, it can develop fungus and make your parrot sick. Use newspaper or paper towels.

African Grey Parrots need entertainment and socialization

You need to be prepared to spend at least an hour a day playing with your African Grey and be in close proximity to it at least 4 hours a day.

Keep a variety of toys available to keep it entertained while you are away.

African Grey Parrots need frequent time out of their cages to explore, but never let it out unsupervised because they can quickly get themselves into trouble with seemingly harmless articles like electrical cords, window and various poisonous plants.

African Grey Parrots make great pets, but be prepared for the fact that they can and will mimic just about every sound they hear from dripping taps to barking dogs.
